One of the biggest mistakes people make is picking a chandelier that doesn't fit the size of your room. Being that a beautiful chandelier is an important decorative element and a focal point to your room it's important that it is sized correctly. An important rule of thumb is to calculate your room dimensions by adding the length of your room to the width of your room and converting feet to inches. For instance, a 18' x 14' room = 32' should accomodate a 32" wide chandelier or close to that. It's also good advice to calculate the size of your table. If your table is 44" you want to leave 6" from each side to ensure that nobody bumps their head and provide adequate lighting. A chandelier should be 12" narrower than the width of the table over which it hangs. For example, a 44" table, deduct 6" on each side, 44"- 12" = 32", which would be the recommended width for your chandelier.
How high should your chandelier be from the table? As a rule of thumb the bottom of the fixture should be a minimum of 5' off the floor and or 30" above the surface of the table. This provides adequate head room while maintaing good illumination.
